Jumuiya Women Fund (JWF) is nonprofit and nonpolitical women’s rights and development organization which leverages its local philanthropic and capacity strengthening strategies to deliver impactful socio-economic outcomes for women and girls in a human rights based context. The Organization is committed to increasing strategic empowerment of the women and girls for improved gender equality and sustainable socio-economic development.
Our groundbreaking work in local philanthropy empowers women organizations and social enterprises to close the gender inequality gap across healthcare, business enterprises, and social organizations. The Organization continues building strategic cooperation and facilitating women empowerment, participation and development efforts.
With support of Equality Fund Canada, JWF is seeking to provide grants to eligible women rights and development organizations in selected counties across Kenya, who are working to advance human rights and socio-economic empowerment of women and girls, enabling them realize their full potentials in society in line with the sustainable development goals.
Thematic priorities eligible for grants.
1. GENDER BASED VIOLENCE. Projects which can be supported may include actions addressing sexual harassment, Online Gender-Based violence (Cyber Bullying), mental health related violence on women, female genital mutilation, early marriage and early pregnancies and dropping out of school and initiatives to support girl’s re-entry into formal school systems.
2. ECONOMIC JUSTICE AND RIGHTS: Projects which can be supported may include actions increasing viable women’s economic opportunities, addressing policy, budgetary and cultural barriers that inhibit women and girls’ from effectively participating in broader economic systems, increasing financial inclusion and access to finance, and strengthening local commerce and trade.
3. SEXUAL AND REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH AND RIGHTS: Projects which can be supported may include actions that promote rights based and feminist focused approaches addressing sexual and reproductive health and rights, advocates against issues denying women and adolescent girls’ access to relevant and gender sensitive information and services to enjoy their full reproductive health rights. Promotes advocacy interventions to advance gender equality in the context of sexual health, through building critical awareness, participation and agency among affected community members, increasing access to Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) and influencing national policies and financing for CSE and SRHR commodities delivered in and out of school using evidence-based methodologies.
4. FEMINIST MOVEMENTS & LEADERSHIP: Projects which can be supported may include actions increasing growth and deepening of feminist movements which adopts inclusive approaches in accelerating transformative changes within the women’s and girls’ movement(s); advances disability rights, children’s rights, migrant rights, gender rights for minority groups, and environmental justice for collective interventions; and addresses negative cultural attitudes, social norms, and public discourses as well as policy and legal frameworks which perpetuates women’s vulnerability.
5. FEMINIST ACTION FOR CLIMATE JUSTICE: Projects which can be supported may include actions that build resilience to climate and disaster risks, mitigate climate change, and address ecological loss and damage, including through provision of quality education, community-based cooperative models and land rights and tenure security; actions that enable women and girls to lead a just transition to an inclusive, circular and regenerative green economy; and actions addressing policies, laws, and cultural challenges facing women and young girls in exercising their voice and agency, including addressing adverse effects of environmental degradation with a particular focus on climate change and land rights for women and girls.
Minimum Eligibility Criteria
The minimum eligibility criteria to apply for this grant include:
a) Be duly registered by either a local or national authority in Kenya and be in active existence for at least 6 months, and compliant with the local regulations and laws;
b) Be governed and led by women, with women filling the majority of leadership and management positions in both the board and secretariat levels;
c) Have a clear commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment defined in your constitution or strategic plan (where it exists);
d) Come from or operate in, or have reach to remote, rural, or marginalized groups and communities in any one of the five priority counties - Uasin Gishu, Homa Bay, Busia, Kericho, Baringo and Elgeyo Marakwet;
e) Be non-discriminatory and open to working with diverse groups and issues regardless of ethnicity, religious beliefs, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, people living with disability and have worked as a group for at least 6 months.
Other requirements include:
a) Self-identification i.e. they identify as women’s groups, movements, networks or organizations;
b) Demonstrable ability to adequately manage funding and other support from JWF;
c) Direct grants will require an independent bank account controlled by women; and
d) Willingness and availability to participate in evaluation and training activities as appropriate to the size and type of grant.
What can’t the grant support?
a) Individual women or their families – such as through scholarships or individual or family assistance payments;
b) Infrastructure such as community halls, resource centers, roads, or water supplies
c) Religious or political activities, i.e. grantees must adopt a non-religious and non-political, neutral approach;
d) Fundraising, donations or prizes;
e) Repayment of loans or bank overdrafts;
f) Expenses which have already been paid for (retroactive funding);
g) Activities which are contrary to the interests of JWF and this call for proposal.
Award information
JWF anticipates awarding grants between minimum KES 200,000 and maximum KES 500,000. The duration of any grant awarded under this solicitation is expected to be not less than 6 months and not more than 12 months. The estimated start date of grants awarded under this solicitation is on or about April 15 2022. JWF strives to build partnerships with the grantees that go beyond financial commitments.

PLEASE NOTE:
Grant applications should be completed in English and submitted by the deadline. Grant Applications must be submitted no later than 23.59 Hours of Friday, April 15, 2022. Any grant application received after this deadline will not be considered. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis throughout the application window. The Grant Application form provides guidance on the number of words per section and the Budget template provides guidelines on completing your budget for the proposed budget.
Any solicitation or canvassing or attempted bribery of JWF staff will lead to automatic disqualification of your grant application. Participation in this call is not an automatic guarantee of funding. JWF reserves the right to award or not to award all or any grants during this call for proposals.
